Description: This is a solo of Sursh Talwalkar I recorded at Shankat Mochan, Varanasi 2005. At Kishan Maharaj's request, he played in deepchandi (14 matras). The solo lasted more than an hour. If anyone is interested in more, let me know. Talwalkar ji is a unique tabla-wadan. He comes from a tradition of 'kirtankar' tabla playing. He is one of the few tabla players to gain fame without coming from one of the traditional gharanas. Even from first sight and sound, his performance is different. For some years he has toured with a large group; a singer, harmonium player, tanpura players, 2 or more students on the tabla, and even another instrument. He makes the stage his own baithak. In rhythm his is influenced by central Indian playing. He learned also partly from a mridangam player. Talwalkar's variations combine math and improvisation in a fluid way. For this reason he gives lengthy solos in various taals. The solo was memorable for his opening singing, and the playful mood he performed.
